We went to the old city and fort again. This time with the Thompsons who had never been. We were talking on the way there about how funny history is. We have been taught in America that Sir Frances Drake was a noble explorer. Well in Cape Verde he is know as a pirate. He is the reason they build the fort! He pillaged Cidade Velha twice! So we were in the process of explaining that to the Thompson when Sister Thompson gets all excited and says that one of her claims to fame is that she is a decedent of Sir Frances Drake. She loved the new take on history and took pictures at all the historical signs that mentioned his name. She can't wait to send them to her extended family back home. Here are a few of my favorite pictures of the day. This is the main square where they have kept a reminder of the sad days of slavery.
This is the oldest street in Cape Verde. It leads to the old church.
This is looking down from the fort to the city. Our tour guide stood on the cannon to get this shot.
